UDF party opens office in Mumias

Saturday, May 19, 2012 - 00:00 -- BY SHABAN MAKOKHA

CONTROVERSY is looming in the United Democratic Forum party in Kakamega county after the party's office was opened in Mumias East constituency yesterday. Kakamega county interim party coordinator Geofrey Nasiali said the party has recruited more than 30,000 members in the county. Presiding the official launch of the office at Shianda, Nasiali said UDF has established five operational offices in the county. “We have our office at Shinyalu, Lugari, Kakamega and Mumias East. We shall be moving to Matungu next week to open another office,” Nasiali said.

However, Mumias East constituency UDF coordinators Livingstone Masakhwe and Edward Wambani dismissed Nasiali saying he is not a bona fide official of the party hence lacks mandate to officiate party activities. “Nasiali has been an ODM county coordinator and he should not assume the same mandate in UDF until he is appointed by party officials. He just defected from ODM yesterday and should not declare himself UDF coordinator,” Wambani said.

Wambani said people defecting from other parties to UDF should read the party constitution and respect the structures. “They also need to wait for harmonisation of our registers before assuming leadership positions in the party,” he said. He said such newcomers still have hangovers from their former parties and may feel frustrated in UDF unless they respect the constitution and structures laid down.

Wambani and Masakhwe said the office opened yesterday is not recognised by party officials because it is affiliated to an MP from the area. They said the genuine party office is not affilated to any political aspirant because it intends to serve the interests of all the members. They asked political aspirants to concentrate on their campaigns and lobby for recruitment of more members into the Mudavadi-led party without interfering with the administrative affairs of the party.
