Some demoted head teachers in a number of secondary schools in Murang’a county have declined to relinquish their positions. Some of the heads yesterday said they will only do so in the presence of officials from the Ministry of Education.

In some schools, officials from the Teachers Service Commission and members of the board of governors watched as heads walked out of the handover ceremonies, insisting that officials from the department of education be present.

At Rurii Secondary School in Murang’a East district, outgoing principal Esther Irungu walked out of the ceremony leaving the board of governors to over- see the handover. Irungu is handing over to Joseph Muturi, who was transferred from Kiranga Secondary School in Kandara district.

“I won’t hand over until I am told to do so by officials from the Ministry of Education,” she said. In Kigumo district, one of the heads affected by the reshuffle placed a notice outside his office indicating that no handover ceremony will take place at the school.

At Nguthuru Secondary School, the incoming Principal MK Mwenda, who was transferred from Giachuki Secondary School in Gatanga district, was rejected and the TSC instead promoted the Njumbi Boys High School Deputy Principal Mr Ngarega.

Murang’a TSC director Ibrahim Adan confirmed Ngarega’s promotion as principal of Nguthuru Secondary School. Adan said Ngarega has vast experience in education. He said many hando- ver ceremonies have taken place. Adan said the rest will take place on Monday and Wednesday.
