Sugar farmers plea to MPs

Sugar farmers and millers want Parliament to speed up the Sugar Amendment Bill to empower the Sugar Arbitration Tribunal to carry out its functions. The representatives of the farmers and millers blamed the persistent fights among cane millers in Western Kenya on weak legal frameworks. They were speaking in Kisumu yesterday when they met the sugar tribunal board members led by the chairman Gregory Mutai. The board said it has no powers to implement their decisions because of the defective sugar Act under which it operates.
