Four elephants killed in Mount Kenya

Wednesday, June 20, 2012 - 00:00 -- BY STAR REPORTER

Four elephants have been poached in the Mount Kenya region in the last few days. The carcasses were found with tusks missing by locals of Ndumanu in Mathira East. Kenya Wildlife Services has been informed of four elephants suspected to have been targeted by poachers in another section of the forest. Sources claim their reports have not been looked into by KWS.

In early January and early March, four elephants were poached in the upper and lower Kamweti forests respectively. In April, a mother elephant and her calf were poached, also in the Kamweti region of Mount Kenya, bringing the total number poached in the region to six. In light of recent reports, it now comes to a total of at least ten confirmed elephants poached in the Mount Kenya region this year alone. Sources report that no arrests have been made thus far.
