Cops probe Mungiki presence claims
POLICE in Kerugoya are probing reports that a group of Mungiki youth held a demo in the town. Area Police boss Patrick Oduma said he had been informed of a demonstration by youth from the area. The demonstration that was to take place yesterday did not go on after it was stopped by the police and a rival group. George Kagori, the youth' chairman, said the demo was peaceful. He said they held the demo to express their anger for being denied jobs by the contractor working on the Kutus-Kerugoya road. “We are bitter that youth from the area have not been given a chance to work on the road,” he said.
Kagori said they have lodged their complain with the police. He said the rival group calling them Mungiki wants to cause a scare in Kerugoya town and should be arrested. Kirinyaga Central CDF chairman Charles Kabui said construction of the road is at an advanced stage. He said the contractor will be prevailed upon to involve local youth. “We are going to involve youth from Kirinyaga in the construction," Kabui said. He said the area MP and the contractor have held meetings to see how the youth can benefit from theproject.
