Mwende steers Embu XI to Copa Coca Cola victory

Superb performance from Doreen Mwende steered Embu XI to a 4-1 win over Meru South in Copa Coca-Cola lower Eastern Inter-sub-branch matches at Kibugua Stadium, Embu. Mwende scored a hat-trick in opening 45 minutes as Caroline Nkirote added the fourth. Peninah Gatoto scored the consolation goal for the losers. Meru were quick off the blocks and could have gone ahead barely two minutes into the match but Gatoto blasted high.

However, the move acted as a wake up call for the winners as Mwende put her team ahead just two minutes later. Two minutes later, however, Gatoto pulled level after tapping home an inviting cross. But this as far as Meru could go as the hosts started calling the shots.

Mwende pulled her team right back ahead in the 10th minute as Nkirote added her name on the score sheet with the third goal. Mwende put the result beyond doubt after completing a hat trick 8 minutes before the interval In the boys’ encounter, hosts Embu also thrashed Meru 4-1 with goals from Simon Nderitu, Kevin Gitonga, Florent Kitili and Steven Njiru. Hassan Mugambi scored the consolation for Meru.
