NCIC and CCK to monitor hate speech
THE National Cohesion and Integration Commission will take stern action against radio stations which fuel hate speech across the country ahead of the general election. NCIC chairman Mzalendo Kibunjia said the commission in collaboration with the Media Council of Kenya, Communications Commission of Kenya and the Ministry of Information and Communication will deregister radio stations that fun hate speech. Kibunjia said the commission will monitor the operations of the stations ahead of the elections.
Kibunjia warned the media against promoting division ahead of the elections. “We shall “crack the whip” on electronic, print and social media which will not heed the requirements so that we do not witness a repeat of what transpired after the 2007 elections,” he said on a radio talk show yesterday. He lamented that the country’s experience particularly during electioneering times has not been good and added that they are taking steps to arrest the situation.
