Nestle Kenya, through its leading brand Milo, will sponsor the Kenya Primary Schools ball Games scheduled to kick-off next week in Bungoma.
The sponsorship will mostly come in form of sports equipment and is valued at Sh5 Million, according to Svetlana Obruchkova, the managing director of Netsle Kenya. “Our journey in supporting Primary Schools Games began in 2009 when Milo entered into a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association (KPSSA). Before we came on board, there was little knowledge of the games outside the participating schools,” said Obruchkova during the Milo partnership launch with the Ministry of Education for Kenya Primary Schools Ball Games yesterday.
Obruchkova said he believes sports has qualities that set the foundation for a child’s future, adding: “It’s through sports that they learn the discipline to persevere through hardship.’
He said careers of some of the country’s like Paul Tergat, David Rudisha and Dennis Oliech among others started at primary level. This year’s games will bring together a total of 1400 boys and girls from across 47 counties. Education secretary Enos Oyaya said: “As a ministry, we place very strong emphasis on the development of sports.”
“We believe sporting activities play a pivotal role in complementing the formal co-curriculum activities and the national goals of education,” continued Oyaya who was flanked by director quality assurance and standards in the Ministry of Education, Mohammed Mwinyi Pembe.
Apart from local sports sponsorship, Nestle has supported African Primary Schools Championships including 2010 edition in South Africa and 2012 event in Ghana.
