Saturday was a big day for the finalist chefs in the Sun Gold Sunrice
Super Chef Pro competition. Emmanuel Aluda and Joseph Macharia were the
last men standing from the initial list of over 30 participants who were
eyeing the Sh250,000 cash prize and other goodies. The grand finale was
held at the Sarit Centre Exhibition Hall.

The judges had
requested each chef to bring in their own choice of ingredients to the
final for their starter, main course and desert. The twist came in when
they were asked to exchange and make the meals in two hours. Chef Aluda
of Sarova Stanley and Chef Macharia of Fairview Hotel put their best
skills, experience and creativity in action with their supporters
applauding their every move. The audience also had a chance to mingle
with the East FM team.

First came out the starter and
Chef Macharia appeared to be in the lead with a wonderful salmon-type
salad. In the main course Chef Aluda caught up and made a delicious
chicken but in the desert Macharia came back with a delicate and
mouthwatering ice cream biscuit. And then the moment we
had all been waiting for. The newly crowned Sun Gold Sunrice Super Chef
Pro winner was Chef Joseph Macharia. He jumped up in joy and from then
on, it was gift after gift for him and Chef Aluda. The cheque of
Sh250,000 was presented to him by the Bidco Oil Refineries and Sunrice
team.

Learning the art of living

The
youth have always faced tough challenges from acne, weight, grades,
drinking to tough childhoods. Stress levels have become higher and there
is a need to make a change, a positive and long lasting one. This is
what the Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar aims to do with
their Yes Plus programme geared especially for the 18 to 30-year-olds. I
met teacher Sayten Rajani and simply put, this is a transformational
course which will be held from July 11-15. It is one step into an
enthusiastic and fulfilling life. This programme is one of the many
inspiring reasons why Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was recently awarded the
honorary doctorate from the Nyenrode University, Netherlands. The
university has in its 65 years honoured great men and women including
Nelson Mandela, APJ Abdul Kalam and Bill Gates.

Jalaram Temple Kisumu marks 18th anniversary

The
city of Kisumu was busy from June 20-24 as the Shree Lohana Mahajan
Kisumu celebrated 18 years of the Jalaram Temple. To mark the milestone,
various activities were held, including a mix of devotional singing
sessions of bhajans (hymns), a singing competition and food donations to
an orphanage. This programme was put together with contributions from
Prime Bank, Guardian Bank, Bank of Baroda and individual donations from
the late V N Badiani family, Late Jivraj Gokaldas and sons and families
and Ashok Khtesi Gosar Shah of Kentons Chemists.
