Three bystanders killed in Kawangware robbery shooting
Three people were shot dead and three others survived with gunshot wounds after armed robbers raided a busy wholesale shop in Kawangware on Monday. Police said five armed gangsters struck at Day Power shop at Stage 2 near Congo at about 8pm. The gangsters, according to the police, ordered customers and the owners of the shop to lie down before making away with more than Sh70,000. The cash was the shop's day collection.
Dagoretti OCPD Mathew Gwiyo said the gangster shot randomly in the air as they were fleeing to scare away members of the public who had been alerted on the robbery. During their escape, the gunmen shot dead three people including a five-year old girl and two young men who were standing on the road near the shop. The police identified the deceased as Faith Shikuri, Victor Ochieng and Brian Wafula who died as he was being rushed to St Mary’s hospital.
Ochieng, a casual labourer at construction sites in the neighborhood was shot in the stomach and died at the Kenyatta National Hospital. The young girl was hit by a bullet on the neck and was pronounced dead as she was being taken to KNH. Gwiyo confirmed that those hit by the robber’s bullets were mere bystanders and would not have known what was going on.
The gangsters were shouting “mwizi, mwizi” (thief, thief) while pointing ahead as they escaped from the scene. Gwiyo said the gangsters escaped into the slum and were hunting them down. Those who were admitted in the hospital were identified as Felix Kadenge and Augustine Maraka. They survived with gunshot wounds and were admitted at the KNH.
