Flood waters have continued causing havoc in the Ewaso Nyiro trading centre.

According to the locals, the rain which started at around 8 pm caused floods which blocked many of the town’s streets and washed away property worth of unknown value.

Commuters going to Sekenani, Narosura, Loita and other areas were stranded for several hours as the town was a no-go zone.

The deluge was witnessed after River Ewaso Nyiro burst its bank and water flooded the trading centre, which is about 10 kilometres from Narok town.

Commuters plying the busy road were stranded for several hours as the roads were impassable.

Many of the buildings in the Narok town were also halfway submerged.

“We feared that we might be swept away, and we had to stop until the waters subsided,” said Peter Kamau.

Dejected traders interviewed by The Star could not hide their desperation.

“This was the heaviest rains in recent days and the rainwater swept my stall clean, we are asking the government to come to our aid and help us start all over again,” said Gladys Kerubo, a vegetable dealer.

There were no deaths or injuries reported as people relocated to the safe grounds when the rains started pondering the area.

This is the fourth time the floods hit town.

A local John Karia said that Friday rains only caused destruction to properties but no life was lost.

“Sadly, the traders, who were trying to start all over again after they were affected by three consecutive floods lost their property to heavy rains for the fourth time,” Karia said.

The locals claimed that the growth of the trading centre has aggravated the problem further.

They say developers make maximum use of available space to construct business premises some even reclaiming parts of what was meant to be a drainage system and waterways in absolute disregard of the menace their projects pose to the drainage system.
