Makueni County Referral Hospital is projected to save Sh7 million annually in energy costs following its 100 per cent reliance on solar power.

This follows a partnership between the Makueni County Government and the UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) that saw solar panels installed at the health facility on Wednesday.

The UK PACT team visited the county on a two-day tour to deliver energy planning and nature-based solutions to climate change.

“The project will result in solar capacity of 200 kilowatts peak load, which is expected to save power costs for the hospital by Sh7 million annually,” a statement released by the British High Commission said.

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior said the project demonstrates the county’s commitment to renewable energy and exploring nature-based solutions to support ecosystem restoration.

“Our county is endowed with natural resources and we have fully integrated green energy in our County Energy Plan," the Governor said.

"Our partnership is geared to put in place a state-of-the-art County Energy Centre in Kisingo to serve the county and the country at large,” he noted.

The Economic Counsellor at the British High Commission Daniel Wilcox lauded the milestone saying conservation efforts have the potential to spur economic growth.

He said the UK values its partnership with Kenya and affirmed its commitment to tackling joint environmental and climate change issues for the sake of future generations.

“This is why we are working with counties like Makueni towards the realisation of green energy and land and ecosystem restoration,"Wilcox said.

"We are committed to strengthening the community’s capacity to respond to climate change and support the productive use of energy through useful energy plans,” Wilcox added.

He commended the Makueni County Government for its county energy plan and for establishing an energy department to enable the energy sector to be mainstreamed across all the other departments.

He also lauded the county government for their active participation in sensitisation workshops that have led to the successful completion of the County Energy Plan.

During the two-day tour of the county, the UK PACT team and county officials also visited farmers who are Trainers-of-Trainers (ToTs) on forest and land restoration.

They witnessed and appreciated the interventions being implemented which have contributed to the improvement of farmers’ livelihoods.

These include water conservation efforts such as water channeling to farm ponds and the use of shade nets to minimize water loss through evaporation.

The team also met tree nursery workers involved in supporting communities to grow trees.

The tree planting project led by World Agroforestry Centre (Icraf) focuses on exploring nature-based solutions to adaptation and has seen more than 1,000 beneficiaries trained in forest and land restoration.

“The lead farmers have been able to cascade the training to 775 other farmers in the county, ensuring equitable gender participation and benefits,” the UK High Commission said.
