Expect more rains – Weatherman warns

Massive flooding being experienced in parts of Nairobi is expected to persist in the next two days, the latest weekly forecast by the Kenya Metrological Department shows.

The update issued Wednesday afternoon comes amidst ongoing efforts by the Kenya Red Cross to evacuate stranded residents from flooded homes.

The KRC has been conducting rescue and evacuation in areas like Githurai and Athi River where nightlong rains overwhelmed drainage systems.

“Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to be recorded across multiple areas within the Nairobi metropolis. Stay prepared,” the Met department said on X.

The forecast shows that rains of up to 20mm will pound Embakassi East and South.

Roysambu, Westlands, Lang’ata, Kibera, Dagoretti North and South, Makadara, Starehe, Kamukunji and Ruaraka should brace for up to 50mm of rain, the weatherman said.

In the weekly rainfall forecast for the period between April 24 and May 1, the weatherman said rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of the country in the next 24 hours.

These include the entire Baringo County covering areas such as Mogotio and Eldama Ravine.

The forecast shows rain is expected to reach 20mm over a 24-hour period ending Thursday, April 25 at 9am in these areas.

It said the scenario will be replicated in Marakwet East and West, parts of Keiyo North and the entire Keiyo South.

Other areas where rainfall of up 20mm is expected over the forecast period include Mbeere South and parts of Mbeere North, but the forecast shows the rain is expected to hit 50mm in Manyatta and Runyenjes in Embu County.

In Bungoma County, 20mm rainfall is expected in Kimilili, Lugari, Tongaren, Likuyani and parts of Mt Elgon whereas areas such as Kanduyi, Bumula, Kabchai and parts of Webuye West and East will experience rains of up to 50mm.

Kenya Met says the rain will hit a high of 70mm in and around Siriswa and areas around North of Mt Elgon.

Budalangi, Funyula, Butula, Nambale, Teso South and Teso North in Busia County are also expected to receive 20mm rain the next 24 hours. A similar occurrence is expected in Isiolo North.

In Kericho County, the forecast shows that rainfall of between 35 to 50mm is expected in Bureti, Belgut, Kipkelion East and West but residents of Sigowet Soin and Ainamoi should brace for rains of up to 70mm.

Kajiado East, West and central will receive 20mm rain but this will rise to between 80mm to 100mm in Kajiado West and its environs. Rain in Kajiado North will be between 50mm to 70mm.

In Kiambu County, heavy rain of between 50mm to 70mm is expected in Gatundu North and South, Kiambaa, Githunguri, Kiambu Town, Kabete and parts of Kikuyu.

Lari, Limuru and Kikuyu will receive 50mm rain, the forecast shows.

A similar scenario will be replicated but on a suppressed level as residents of Karachuonyo, Rangwe and Homa Bay should expect 20mm rain.

In Kirinyaga County, Ndia and its environs is expected to receive massive rain of up to 100mm which Kenya Met says will slightly drop to around 80mm in Kirinyaga Central, and drop further to around 70mm in Gichugu.

Rain intensity in parts of Mwea will oscillate between 40mm and 70mm.

Other areas where rain is expected are Matungu, Mumias, Butere, Lurambi, Navakholo and Ikolomani (20mm) as well as Khwisero, Shinyalu, Malava, Mumias East and parts of Lugari (20-50mm).

Others are Kisumu West and East, Muhoroni and Nyakach in Kisumu County and Magarini, Ganze, KIlifi North, South and Rabai in Kilifi County.

Half of Kitui County, the forecast indicates, will receive rains of up to 20mm in areas such as Kitui Rural, Mwingi North, Central and East.
