Police on Wednesday arrested one suspect found in possession of heroin and bhang in Mombasa.

Mombasa anti-narcotics detectives arrested the suspected drug trafficker in Kiembeni, Bombo area of Kisauni.

Police seized several sachets of suspected heroin and cannabis sativa from his house and car.

The suspect was arrested in an early morning operation sparked by a tip-off from a member of the public.

Police are holding his vehicle, Sh26,250 and $200, a weighing machine, packaging envelopes and three mobile phones believed to be proceeds of crime.

Police said the phones are believed to contain data of his accomplices.

Police said he will be arraigned at the Mombasa Law Courts on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

Cases of drug trafficking and consumption have been on the rise at the Coast region prompting authorities to move into action to address the menace.

According to investigators, the drugs also find their way into nightclubs and some hotels which both local and foreign tourists can access.

Some of the drug peddlers are also associated with criminal groups involved in muggings within Kisauni, Bombolulu, Majengo and Likoni areas.

President William Ruto asked leaders to demonstrate seriousness in the fight against drug abuse.

He said there was no way the vice could be contained if leaders did not take the lead in fighting it.

“What moral authority do we have as leaders to lecture other people over drugs if we are the ones taking shisha?" Ruto asked.
