Ruto congratulates Obiri for Boston Marathon title defence

He also commended the entire Team Kenya for delivering excellent results.

President William Ruto has congratulated Marathoner Hellen Obiri for defending her Boston title.

Sharon Lokedi came second in 2:22:45 followed by Edna Kiplagat in third place who clocked 2:23:21.

Kenya's Evans Chebet finished third in the men's race.

The President said they have have represented the country well and delivered excellent results.

"Congratulations Hellen Obiri for successfully defending your Boston Marathon title and leading Team Kenya to a clean sweep, with Sharon Lokedi and Edna Kiplagat securing second and third places respectively," he said.

"Well done Evans Chebet for securing the bronze medal in the men's race. You have all represented our nation commendably and are excellent ambassadors for Kenya."

Obiri, 34, becomes the first woman to win back-to-back Boston Marathons since 2005.

Obiri attributed her success to the hard training that she did prior to the race.

"Last year I was not familiar to marathon but this year my training was perfect. We trusted everything we were doing and even the speed," she said in her post-race interview.

"We said that I was ready than last year, of course I meant that we were going to win which is very precious to me," Obiri added.

The runner admitted that the race was tough as she was up against a field of strong contenders in the race that attracted nearly 30,000 runners.

The win makes her the only woman to have won world titles in indoor trackoutdoor track and cross country.

First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto congratulated Obiri for the win saying she showcased her dedication.

"Congratulations, Hellen Obiri, for conquering the 2024 Boston Marathon! Your incredible feat not only showcases your exceptional talent and dedication, but also shines a spotlight on Kenya's prowess in long-distance running. As a nation, we unite to celebrate your remarkable achievement. Keep soaring, keep shining!" She said.

Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen said that Obiri displayed an incredible talent and determination.

"You're the first woman to achieve back-to-back wins since Catherine Ndereba in 2004-2005. Kudos also to Sharon Lokedi and Edna Kiplagat for their impressive 2nd and 3rd place finishes," he said.
