A traffic police officer caught on camera allegedly collecting bribes from motorists has been suspended.

In communication with the Star, the police headquarters said they are carrying out proceedings for his dismissal.

"Further to our earlier communication on the ongoing administrative action, the officer has been suspended and disciplinary proceedings for his dismissal are ongoing," it said.

Earlier, the National Police Service had stated that the officer was removed from the Traffic Police Unit and recalled to the police headquarters for further administrative action, after his identification.

In a clip posted on TikTok, a uniformed traffic police officer is seen receiving something from drivers and conductors as matatus pass by him.

What he receives though, cannot be ascertained from the clip.

This happens with at least two vehicles.

NPS has commended the public and members of the press for their continued collaboration with the service in the fight against corruption.

The Police Service assured the public that it remains committed to its constitutional mandate of fighting corruption, striving for the highest standards of professionalism and discipline among members.

It further noted that it will continue promoting accountability and transparency and upholding the rule of law.

Data released in March by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) showed that a traffic police is likely to ask for a bribe three times more than his administration counterpart.

According to the Commission's Survey 2023, traffic police, county health department and regular police are the three most bribery-prone public institutions.

"There is a likelihood that each time a service is sought in the traffic police department, county health department and in the regular police one is likely to be asked for a bribe 1.45, 1.05 and 1.02 times, respectively," the survey showed.

"An administration police officer is likely to take a bribe 0.47 times, becoming the fourth public entity with the least bribery index."
