Easy Coach Limited has given an update following an accident which involved one of its buses in Kisumu.

The accident which occurred in Mamboleo -Kisumu on April 1, 2024, around 10 pm left one dead and several injured.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm a fatal accident involving our Mbale-Nairobi bus," reads the notice on Tuesday.

A Chavakali Boys High School student died in the accident while at least 33 were injured.

The injured were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for treatment following the Monday night accident along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway, police said.

The bus was ferrying the students to Nairobi following the closure of schools for the first term.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control at the Mamboleo roundabout in Kisumu.

EasyCoach extended its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the late students.

Also, the bus company wished a steady recovery to the injured students who were admitted to the hospital.

"Three additional passengers were admitted to the hospital but are currently in stable condition We wish them a full and speedy recovery. Other passengers received medical attention and have since been discharged," reads the statement further.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander, Allan Mwangi, said they were looking for the driver of the bus for questioning as part of the probe into the accident.

According to Easy Coach, the bus company is working closely with authorities to investigate the cause of the accident.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved," reads the statement.

Pedestrians recorded the highest number of fatalities in road accidents that have occurred since the year started.

This is according to statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) collected between January 1 to March 24, 2024.

The data seen by the Star shows that pedestrians accounted for 403 deaths out of the 1,090 recorded during the period under review.

This is an increase compared to the same period last year where 343 deaths were reported.

The data, however, showed a slight decrease in deaths involving motorcyclists which stood at 260 compared to 276 recorded same period in 2023.
