New food processing firm to boost rehab in malnourished children

A new firm that seeks to deal malnutrition in children has been launched in Athi River, Machakos county.

Leira Foods was launched on Thursday at Export Processing Zone by US Ambassador Meg Whitman.

Its unveiling marked Chandaria family's commitment to providing essential food solutions in Africa.

The new firm is expected to help Insta Products EPZ to boost rehabilitation of malnourished in Kenya from two to five million annually.

"The opening of this new facility is a testament to the power of private sector, the government, EPZA, UN, US and other NGOs partnerships to make lives better," Whitman said.

"The launch of this new plant and equipment will help triple the number of rehabilitated malnourished children." 

Leira Foods CEO Nikita Chandaria said the company is ready to deliver the best products to the market.

She praised the firm's team work and dedication, which she said, had made the launch a success.

The firm, which is already operational, has employed more than 100 people directly.

"Leira Factory showcases Kenya's food processing innovation, reaffirming its global health commitment," Nikita said.

The firms joins INSTA Products, which is the largest producer of ready - to-use therapeutic food in East Africa. 

The products are designed to treat severe, moderate and acute malnutrition (SAM & MAM) in children under five years.

Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, EPZA Board chairman Richard Cheruiyot, EPZA CEO Richard Omelu and SEZ CEO Kenneth Chelule were at the launch.

Insta Products CEO Dhiren Chandaria the company has saved children’s lives.

He said the life–saving therapeutic food is made with a special mix of proteins, carbohydrates, oils, fasts and a host of vitamins and minerals for critical aid relief.

The firm, in partnership with USAID, Unicef and other organisations, has reached more than 20 countries and ensured timely delivery of high-quality products.
