Governor Lusaka allocates Sh324m for scholarship, bursaries

Governor Ken Lusaka has announced that his administration has allocated Sh114 million for form one scholarship beneficiaries and a further 180 million for bursaries across the wards.

Speaking at Mabanga ATC on Friday during the launch of the Bungoma County Scholarship for the 6th cohort, Lusaka reaffirmed his commitment to streamlining both the scholarship and county bursary scheme.

“As I promised during the campaigns I will streamline the bursary and scholarship scheme, ignore naysayers saying I will scrap it off, I am very committed to what I pledged,” Lusaka said.

He called for the decentralization of vetting committees to ensure there is no duplication of beneficiaries to ensure a majority of deserving students are captured.

The Governor urged the Department of Education to publish and hang the list of all beneficiaries at their respective Ward Administrators' offices for transparency purposes.

Lusaka further said the funds would be sent directly to the school bank accounts to curb corruption cases witnessed when using cheques and also reduce costs incurred to deliver cheques to institutions.

The county allocated Sh4 million in each Ward for the county Bursary Scheme kitty that's set to benefit close to 36,000 students within the county.

Deputy Governor Jenipher Mbatiany, MPs;  John Makali (Kanduyi), Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), Jack Wamboka (Bumula), Murumba Chikati (Tongaren), CECMs, a section of MCA’s led by the Deputy Majority leader Joan Kirong were present.
