More than 50 elephants have invaded

Kiteje and Mbuguni villages in Kwale and destroyed

crops.

The

elephants are from Mwalungaje Elephant Sanctuary.

Kenya Wildlife Services officer Edward Karanja said the animals invaded the villages on Saturday night.

"No injuries have been reported but we have received reports of crop damage on the farms," he said.

Karanja told the Star on Monday that they will compensate the farmers after assessing the damage.

He said KWS officers have begun driving the animals back to the sanctuary through Kaya Bombo.

“As we talk now the operation is ongoing. We have our officers on the ground to monitor and control the movement of the elephants,” he said.

He urged residents to be on the lookout and monitor the movement of the animals.

"We request our people to cooperate with us and monitor the movement of the animals. The situation will soon be contained," he said.
