A Mombasa MCA was on Wednesday arrested after joined matatu crews in a protest against harassment by county traffic marshalls.

Police said the Mikindani ward representative Renson Thoya was arrested on suspicion of being of the demonstration's ringleaders.

Coast regional traffic police boss Emmanuel Okanda said the protesters breached the coastal town's peace hence the lawmaker's arrest.

"The constitution safeguards a peaceful demonstration but once the participants behave in a manner that breaches peace then the ringleaders are held responsible."

Central Police OCS Barnabas Chumo said Thoya, who joined the demos in solidarity with crews from his ward, was booked at the station.

Before his arrest, the legislator told journalists that the county traffic department must find a permanent terminus for matatus to avert cases of harassment.

Mwaluma Karisa, a driver on Mikindani route, said they have to part with Sh1000 to avoid arrests by the county traffic officers.

Okanda said that the MCA will be presented to the court on Thursday to be charged with incitement to violence.
