The National Land Commission has revoked titles for 150 public plots allocated to influential individuals and institutions in Eldoret town.

Twenty prime plots belong to the Uasin Gishu government and 120 are owned by the Kenya Prisons Service.

The NLC gazetted the decision following investigations and public hearings by the commission done between January 30, 2017, and February 3, 2017.

"This is prisons land reserved vide Gazette Notice No 371 of 1961 and No 751 of 1963 which vested the land in prisons department. It's public utility land not available for allocation," said part of the notice.

MTRH CEO Wilson Aruasa said the land allocated for the new 2,000 bed-capacity MTRH facility was not affected because the government had already issued a title for it as directed by NLC.

Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago welcomed the decision. He said the land will be used for schools and hospitals.

Among the key plots, which are listed as grabbed, include the county headquarters in Eldoret where Mandago’s office is located.

The governor asked the judiciary to speed up hearing of pending cases on grabbed land in the town.

Meanwhile, the National Environmental Authority will demolish 27 buildings and other structures on riparian land in Eldoret.

Uasin Gishu Industrialisation county executive Emily Kogos said the buildings are located along Sosiani River.

Dr Kogos said the building owners have been given notices for demolition. Buildings on road reserves are being demolished.

The county plans to use Sh300 million for re-planning Eldoret to position itself for city status.
