EACC arrests five HomaBay county officials over Sh26m loss

Five people have been arrested by EACC officers over the

loss of Sh26 million in Homa Bay County.

They include; Micheal Owino Ooro (former majority leader),

Issac Nyandege (former

minority leader) and

Judith Omongi (nominated MCA).

Others are Caroline Sang(Principle finance officer) and

Edwin Okollo(senior accounts controller).

They are among seven suspects that DPP Noordin Haji had ordered for their arrest.

The DPP said the officials

were allegedly

involved in a fictitious procurement and payment of MCAs' allowances

for the financial years 2014/15 and 2016/17.

said the suspects will be charged with conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, unlawful acquisition of

public

property, abuse of office, breach of trust and fraudulent payment from public revenue.

Otieno Bob Kephas (county assembly clerk) and

Morris Amok (Senior accountant) are still at large, Waqo said

in a statement on Thursday.

The arrested suspects are currently held at Homabay police station and will be charged on August 17th.

In February, some

Homa Bay MCAs asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate cases of alleged corruption at the assembly.

They

accused some top assembly officials of using public funds to serve their personal interests.

Last year, the EACC raided the assembly and some officials were arrested. The commission said at least Sh400 million had been misused.
