A suspected Oromo Liberation Front member was charged on Wednesday with unlawful possession of a firearm and being in Kenya illegally.

Qalicha Abakule was arrested in Sololo village in Marsabit county by officers of the Anti-Terror Police Unit officers on July 26.

He was allegedly found with a pistol with seven bullets.

The accused denied the charges before chief magistrate Francis Andayi and was freed on a Sh30,000 bond, with the requirement for a Kenya surety to submit his ID to the court.

The ATPU did not oppose Abakule's release.

Abakule has been appearing in court since Monday but was not charged because the court did not have an interpreter. He only understands the Borana language.

OLF members stormed the Qate AP camp suspecting the ATPU officers had detained him there. Sources claimed that after sensing defeat, the APs allowed the militants to search the camp to confirm Abakule's absence.

They destroyed the ATPU's car by spraying it with bullets after failing to find their comrade.

Abakule was being detained at Sololo police station at the time.
