The Editors' Guild secretary Christine Nguku has said the media will not be cowed; it will continue telling the truth.

She said the media fraternity is in a shock over threats and letters issued to People Daily journalists to appear before the National Assembly today. Nguku spoke in Nairobi on Thursday during the Annual Media Summit.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi summoned parliamentary reporters Dinah Ondari and Anthony Mwangi to face the Powers and Privileges Committee over an article titled "House of Bribes". The article alleged

Sh500 million has exchanged hands in questionable dealings between the MPs and various parties under probe by the 12th Parliament.

Nguku said the media read mischief and lack of respect.

She said journalists are mandated to document both good and bad events for public knowledge. Nguku said the people committing offences are never happy to be exposed.

Nguku said every person in position of authority or leadership must be ready to be scrutinised and be held accountable. She said the media plays a watchdog role.

“The media has a legitimate right to criticise any institution including Parliament and the Presidency,” Nguku said.

She said corruption is a reality in Kenya and the media must expose it.

Nguku said the media will

continue providing a platform for debate of the Big Four agenda.

She said access to information is key.

“We will be on the lookout to see the policies implemented, funds allocated and how the cash is spent," Nguku said.

She said the media has a Complaints Commission which is open to all Kenyans including Speaker Muturi.

Nguku praised Mediamax journalists for their bravery.
