Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has disbanded the county water board over deteriorating services.

He has sent general manager George Karanja on compulsory leave but said the staff is not affected.

"I have received numerous complains on deteriorating water and sewage services in the county especially in Meru town and it's environs," he said through a statement from director of communication Nkirote Kirebe.

The Governor authorised the Water CEC and Tana Water Services Board to take over and manage the board's operations.

"My number one priority as a government is to provide water," he said.

He said the County Assembly passed the Meru Water and Sanitation Act which established Meru County Urban and Sanitation Services Corporation, which abolished MEWASS.

"The MEWASS board is therefore illegally in office and should not manage water and sanitation services in Meru.

"I am in the process of appointing the board of directors and a CEO for the corporation to facilitate a smooth transition in spirit of corporation with the national government," he added.
