Central Bank of Kenya won the overall title during the 33rd edition of the Kenya Institute of Bankers (KIB) Inter-bank Games held at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies.
CBK garnered 619 points to win the crown with former champions Equity Bank settling for second spot with 583. Barclays completed the podium after managing 573 points. In netball, Agricultural Finance Corporation won the title for the 10th year in a row. The financial institution’s team known as AFC Kamili garnered 12 points during the event played on round-robin basis to retain the crown. AFC beat Equity 18-7, walloped Coop Bank 24-1, annihilated Central Bank 30-6, trounced Post Bank 31-12 before overcoming Barclays Bank 28-12. The team’s win was buoyed by Kenya’s former national team players including captain Betty Awuor, Florence Julu, Harriet Shidambasi, Everlyne Adeny and Monica Lango. The team was disbanded in 2002 before it was revived in 2007 when they won the first title. Awuor said they had prepared well for the tournament and attributed their success to players’ experience and support from the management.
Equity dethroned Consolidated Bank as football champions after a 1-0 win in the final. Derrick Ayisi netted the lone goal in the 63rd minute. The games were officially closed by the CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge and his deputy, Sheila M’Mbijjewe.
