A drugs and alcohol sensitization meeting at Kithaku market in Central Imenti, Meru was on Saturday interrupted by drunk youths.

The youths were protesting the method the county leadership intends to apply in dealing with second generation alcohols.

The meeting was organised by area MCA and county executive for Youths and Sports.

The drama ensued when the county executive Daniel Kiogora rose to address the gathering.

The agitated CECM said Bhang and other illegal drugs have destroyed local youths.

"We have embarked on this sensitization because this must come to an end. We will continue to talk to them and seek counsellors help and advises. We also urge area residents to reject and strongly fight against bhang and second generation alcohol," he said.

He said the drugs have led to dysfunction, high school dropouts and many have absconded their daily duties and activities.

Kiogora said the county will start issuing funds to youths who have undergone rehabilitation to establish their income-generating businesses.

He added that the County government will petition the national government through the Senate and National Assembly to amend the law regulating time for alcohol consumption

"We are to petition the national government on the law regulating sales of alcohol or second generation alcohol to be amended so that they are sold after daily activities to restore and rescue lives of our youths," Kiogora said.

The Meru based rehabilitation centre program coordinator Jasper Mutiga was forced to stop his address after shouts from a section of youths.
