Girl who eloped with Homa Bay man sits KCPE in police cell

A KCPE candidate who sat her papers on Thursday at a police cell.

The pupil missed her Kiswahili and Science papers on Wednesday after she eloped with her 30-year-old lover Isaac Ochieng'.

The headteacher of her school said the girl sat the first papers on Tuesday then left for Ndhiwa township in the evening.

"She said she was with a boyfriend who lives in Ndhiwa town after being interrogated by parents," George Ogutu

said.

Witnesses said Ochieng' hid the girl in a house and was armed with a panga ready to attack those who wanted to take her away.

She reportedly disappeared when she heard her parents were looking for her.

"The parents came to school on Wednesday morning, to find out if the girl had reported for exams, but they did not find her so hey began looking for her together with police," a witness said.

Area OCPD Nixon Makokha said they found the girl at a village near Sori town in the neighbouring Migori county.

Makokha said they discovered that the man had taken the girl to one of his relative's home.

"We found the girl and Ochieng' in the village home and arrested them," Makokha said.

The police boss said they liaised with area education officials to ensure she took her Social Studies and Religious Education papers on Thursday.

"We have accommodated the girl to write her examination in one of our offices under safe custody," he said.

He said Ochieng' was detained at the police station pending the girl's age assessment.

"I have sent the girl's parents to bring her certificate. We will also take the girl to a hospital for age assessment," he added.

"We will hand the girl back to her parents if she is found to be underage but the man will be charged with defilement."

KCPE examinations went on smoothly countrywide and ended on Thursday
