Residents of Ushindi in Likoni are living in fear following the emergence of a gang that demands their IDs.

Three people were treated at Coast Provincial General Hospital after they were accosted by suspected gang members on Monday night.

Residents say the group of about 50 is armed with crude weapons such as pangas and clubs.

The gang, whose activities were first reported following a black out on Monday, does not steal anything.

Victims said this might be an orchestrated plan aimed at preventing them from voting on Thursday.

Likoni police boss Benjamin Rotich refuted the claims saying the attacks are not linked to the presidential election.

"We have launched investigations to unravel the motive

Rotich said police were deployed to pursue the attackers but that nobody has been arrested so far.

"It is still too early to say whether it is the Wakali Kwanza or Watalia gang," the police boss added.

Coast regional police chief Larry Kieng warned against any plan to disrupt the election.

"Let those planning to cause chaos be informed that we are ready to deal with them. Remain at home if you don't want to vote."
