There was tension at Isiolo-Meru border on Tuesday after more than 60 armed Turkana bandits stole more than 1,000 cattle and 400 goats.

The bandits, who invaded Kamuten village in Laikumukumu, Tigania East, at around 4am, shot and killed two people.

Tigania East OCPD Samwel Kosgey said they bolstered security in the area and were pursuing the cattle rustler.

"We have deployed a combined team of security personnel," the police boss said.

Meru herders chairman John Ntiritimi said laxity by police was to blame for the incident.

County commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga said more than 200 police reservists are being trained to enhance security in the area.

"We have acquired a helicopter to help us track the stolen animals. The trained KPRs officers will soon be armed with rifles."

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi on Wednesday said he will involve Isiolo leaders in finding a solution to the cattle rusting menace.

"I know your main challenge is banditry. I will sit with the Isiolo governor and county commissioner regarding your protecting and and [action on] rustlers," Kiraitu said.

Ntunene MCA Jediel Mauta asked security agencies to flush out the rustlers, saying they also sexually abuse women during raids.

"I urge chief, sub-chiefs, OCSs, OCPDs and Meru leaders to improve security. On Tuesday, four Turkana bandits raped a woman at Kilera," the MCA said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, during a campaign in the region on October 6, said his administration will end the banditry that has claimed several lives in Meru.

"We have deployed 100 APs who will patrol Igembe and Tigania regions," Uhuru said.
