The Chief of Defence Forces has urged the military to remain apolitical amid uncertainty on the repeat vote.

The standoff pitting President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga remains unresolved.

General Samson Mwathethe

stressed

at the weekend that soldiers observe KDF values of civil prerogative, loyalty and commitment, patriotism, professionalism and integrity.

"These core values remain and should always be the fundamental drivers of our courage and strength," Mwathethe said on KDF Day in Isiolo.

KDF held its sixth celebration on Saturday after a military incursion to pursue al Shabaab militants in Somalia.

Mwathethe noted the irreplaceable gap left by fallen soldiers is a reminder of the heavy cost of freedom.

He said KDF personnel will be expected to continue sacrificing their all, both on deployment and within the units.

"It is undeniable that since our entry into Somalia, Kenya and the region's stability has greatly improved and terror activities have reduced."

The General recognised officers and servicemen of outstanding performances both on the battlefront and in other military duties.

Kenya Army commander Lieutenant General Robert Kibochi commended the troops for strides made in fighting terrorism.

Kibochi thanked Kenyan troops for their zeal in reducing al Shabaab's strength, saying Kenyans will forever be grateful for their sacrifice.

He also stressed the role the military plays and highlighted the large number of activities KDF has taken part in.

KDF day is commemorated annually across all military establishments to honour soldiers killed in the pursuit of peace in the country and the region.

This year's theme was Progressively building robust capability in defence of the nation.

The theme is an assurance to the nation that KDF will continue to focus on capabilities that can meet contemporary and future threats and challenges.
