Murang'a Senator-elect Irungu Kang'ata has asked leaders serving a second term to mentor first time politicians.

He said politicians should start serving voters now that the elections are over.

"Politics and campaigns are over now and we will now embark on serving the electorate because this is what we have been tasked to do," the former Kiharu MP said on Tuesday.

Kang'ata was speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.

He lauded residents for electing Waiguru as among the country's first female governors and termed it a political milestone.

"Our country has grown politically given the number of people who were elected, and i am glad that as a friend of Kirinyaga I get to share in the glory of your being ranked as the first counties to accept women leaders as governors, it is good precedent," the Senator said.

The Senator who trounced Kembi Gitura reaffirmed his commitment to serving Murang'a residents for the next five years.

"We will ensure our county grows and no resources are misappropriated and we will also stand with the government of President Uhuru Kenyatta even stronger," he added.

He also said he will be seeking to be the next deputy speaker in the Senate, a seat that was previously held by Kembi who lost in the August 8 elections.

"The people of Murang'a had one of their own at the Senate as the Deputy Speaker so for inclusivity we hope this will continue after we are sworn in," Kangata said.
