An Embu man who said smoking bhang helped him dig proper pit latrines was sentenced to five months in jail on Thursday.

Joseph Muriithi pleaded guilty to the charge of having

100g of bhang with the street value of Sh400 at Kathunguri village in Embu North sub-county.

He was unkempt when he appeared before

Embu resident magistrate Jean Ndeng’eri.

Kathuri noted digging the latrines was his only source of income.

Asked to give reasons for a lenient judgment or forgiveness, he said:

"Your honour, I could only dig the latrines after smoking bhang.”

Noting the seriousness of the offence, the magistrate fined him Sh30,000 and said he would be jailed if he did not pay it.

The man was taken to

Embu GK Prison as he could not raise the money.
