Five staff members from St Augustine Preparatory School have been charged with the murder of a six-year-old pupil.

The five are school principal Sara Kesi, bursar Venant Mwaliko, driver Vald Mbadi, his assistant Abdenego Mwendwa and school mechanic Charo Kazungu.

They were each released on a Sh1 million personal bond by the Mombasa High Court.

Judge Dora Chepkwony dismissed an application by the accused to face traffic-related charges instead of murder.

She said the DPP is an independent office and does not receive directions on charges.

Chepkwony further ordered the accused to appear at the county commander's office every Monday and go for a psychiatric test to determine if they are fit to stand trial.

Jeremy Masila died at Sega area in Majengo on July 21.

Coast traffic boss Emmanuel Okanda said the child was crushed while trying to pick his water bottle and bag which fell through a gap in the floor plate of the bus.

The five will answer to charges when hearings resume on August 21.
