On June 25, Raila held a huge rally in Siaya town and endorsed ODM candidates.

During the meet, he embraced Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo, promising to negotiate with him to drop his bid.

He said Jakoyo will be given a big job if NASA forms the next government.

Since then, Jakoyo has not been seen campaigning with other independent candidates like before.

Nominations no doubt threw the public into a state of confusion when political bigwigs were trounced and some opted to run as independents.

Midiwo, Rarieda’s Nicholas Gumbo, and nominated MP Oburu Oginga failed to secure the ODM ticket.

Oburu was floored by Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda and is said to have conceded defeat after consultations.

ODM heavyweight and National Assembly deputy minority leader Jakoyo Midiwo was handed a humiliating defeat by Elisha Odhiambo in the Gem MP primaries.

Gumbo failed to secure the ODM ticket in the governor primay after he lost to incumbent Cornel Rasanga.

Jakoyo and Gumbo accused ODM of rigging them out.

A few days after the nominations, those who jumped ship to run as independents managed to win the hearts of locals, who sympathised with them.

NASA’s Raila Odinga’s first visit in Siaya after nominations was on May 19 during the funeral of Mama Gladys Amollo, the mother of ODM Rarieda MP candidate Otiende Amollo.

He told residents to ignore the independents. The presidential flagbearer said they have no agenda but are running for selfish gain.

Raila toured Bondo town on June 5 with four NASA co-principals on his way to Kapsabet.

He, again, drummed up support for ODM candidates. “I don’t want independents to complicate issues on my home turf. They are independent just as the name suggests,” Raila said.
