IEBC on Friday suspended campaigns in Siaya County for seven days following the chaos during Raila Odinga's Rarieda rally.

County Returning Officer Ruth Kulundu said all candidates are barred from conducting their campaigns until July 7.

She warned, in a meeting with aspirants, that any defiance of the order will be met with severe punishment.

The official said the ban will continue after July 7 if there will be no signs of tolerance among candidates or their supporters.

"I want to believe that by then, the animosity being witnessed in the county among candidates will have toned down."

Kulundu regretted that supporters from both political divide have been defacing posters and pulling down campaign banners.

"These acts are a threat to peace. There is the need for peace and unity before, during and after the August 8 election," she said.

She affirmed that there is no way IEBC will sit back and entertain violence during campaigns.

Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga, independent candidates Nicholas Gumbo, Florence Aluodo and were in attendance.

The county security team, led by county commissioner Josphine Onunga, also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, emotions ran high as candidates played victim claiming to have been offended in one way or another.

Gumbo, who spoke first, condemned ODM brigade for hurling insults at him during Raila's campaign trail in Siaya.

He lamented that it was not in order for the team to abuse him in reference to his late mother.

But Rasanga defended ODM saying Gumbo has no moral authority to point fingers at anyone for abusing him.

"I have many recordings with me where Gumbo, not once or twice, has called me a thief. Can he prove that in a court of law?"

Maurice Simiyu, the Alego Usonga returning officer, said it's against the law for candidates to hurl insults in public during campaigns.

Simiyu asked politicians to observe the code of conduct they signed before nominations.

He also emphasised on the need of the independent candidates to observe the law on symbols and colours.

The official also warned aspirants against dishing out money to voters saying those found will face the full force of the law.

However, the move by Siaya county returning officer to suspend campaigns didn't auger well with some of the candidates in the county.

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi said the IEBC's action is high-handed and draconian.

Wandayi said the move is an unwarranted for to punish the entire candidates for an incident whose perpetrators are well known.

"Such is a plot to profile the people of Siaya as violent in order to justify a violation of their constitutional rights."

Rasanga said he will contest the ban in court after consulting his lawyers.
