Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has exempted hawkers, small-scale vegetable and cereal vendors as well as mitumba clothes traders from paying levies.

In a notice on Tuesday, Mutua further suspended market cess for livestock, bus park fees and boda bodas.

"This order is meant to protect vulnerable members of our business community and grow our local economy."

"All revenue collection and enforcement agencies have been informed about the decision," Mutua said.

He directed the finance and revenue management department to stop collecting levies with immediate effect.

Mutua spoke to journalists in his office on Tuesday.

He was with Finance CEC Elizabeth Mutheu, chief officer Jacinta Masila and acting county secretary Grace Munguti.

The Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader further said that all salons, shops, barber shops, shoe shiners, kiosks and M-Pesa shops will also be exempted.

He warned that any county official found not adhering to the notice will be prosecuted.

"Any officer found charging increased fees or harassing traders should be reported to the relevant office for immediate disciplinary action."
