The Ministry of Education in partnership with that of Health are now seeking for more donors as there is a likelihood of extending the primary school deworming programme.

Education PS Belio Kipsang said for the past four years since the project started,

more than six million children have been dewormed every year in 27 counties deemed to have high infection prevalence.

He was speaking yesterday during the release of the fourth year deworming results at a Nairobi Hotel.

“In the year 2015-16 we targeted to deworm 5.5 million children at risk of infection, but we managed 6.4 million, which surpassed our target. This was done in 27 counties representing 145 subcounties, and 16,708 schools out of a total of 23,000 primary schools in the country,” Kipsang said.

However, Kipsang said the programme implementation has faced challenges.

“Different counties have varying governing systems making timing of activities difficult. The ideal would be a national deworming day across all treatment areas, but this has not been possible because of competing priorities and programmes within counties,” he said.
