Hundreds of passengers were yesterday left stranded as the National Transport and Safety Authority launched a crackdown on illegal PSVs.
Road Safety director Njeri Waithaka said the crackdown targetted private cars working illegally as PSVs.
“More than 14 per cent of deaths on these roads every year are caused by such cars because they do not have the required licences,” she said. Njeri said the drivers are not only endangering their lives but also those of the passengers. In many instances, when an accident occurs no one is compensated.

Those caught were headed to Kisii, Kisumu and Kakamega.
“We are going to go on with this crackdown as long as we know there are vehicles still doing this,” she said.
Since January 1,397 people have died in road crashes. This is, however, a reduction of 6.7 per cent over the same period in the previous year, Njeri said.
