Former PS John Githongo yesterday told a court €59.6 million (Sh6.8 billion) paid to one of the Anglo Leasing type companies was never recovered.

He told Milimani senior principal magistrate Martha Mutuku a foreign company known as Infotalent Limited refunded commitment fee and additional money amounting to €5.2 million (Sh5.9 billion) which had been paid by the government in relation to police E-cops security contract in the 2003-04 financial year.

He was testifying in a case in which the late former Finance minister David Mwiraria, three former PSs and two businessmen have been charged with conspiracy to defraud the government through a contract to upgrade police equipment.

The minister, who died in April, was charged alongside former PSs Joseph Magari, Dave Mwangi and David Onyonka and businessmen Deepak and Rashmi Kamani.

“I made efforts to have the monies amounting to 5.2 million euros refunded in between May and August 2004 after l persuaded all the government officials who knew the directors of the said company,” the witness said.

On Monday a request by the DPP to have witnesses in the Anglo-leasing case testify through video-link was opposed.
