Security agencies in Elgeyo Marakwet will infiltrate social media to nab and arrest hate mongers, a government official has said.
County commissioner Fredrick Ndambuki on Saturday said criminal investigators have started infiltrating several WhatsApp groups as part of a crackdown on social media incitements and hate mongering.
He said security agencies are concerned about rising cases of tribal animosities ahead of the August 8 polls.
“We will monitor what is posted every minute and anybody found to have posted hate messages against any group of persons will be arrested,” Ndambuki said.
He spoke during a peace meeting in Iten, where he added that the government will provide necessary and adequate support. Security officers will also be deployed to banditry-prone Kerio Valley to ensure calm during campaigns.
