Police in Thika town have arrested a young man suspected to be the ringleader in a series of rape cases, muggings and maiming of residents.

Kimani Koinange, alias Kim, was arrested on Friday with a toy pistol, a police uniform, a panga and knife.

Area AP commandant Peter Nzimbi said they arrested the suspect at his hideout in Kiandutu slums after trailing him for a while.

"We have zeroed in on the suspects and arrested one who has been apprehended and taken to court several times," he

told journalists.

Nzimbi said more crimes are being committed in Kiandutu, Majengo and Kiganjo slums.

He said young men have been terrorising residents but noted officers were deployed to end their activities.

"We are conducting patrols in areas including Kiandutu, Kiganjo and Makongeni which have young boys who can be troublesome. We will make sure we contain the situation," the AP boss said.

Koinange was taken to Thika police station and will be arraigned once police complete investigations.
