The Kenya National Bureau of Standards has approved the use of biodegradable and environment-friendly packaging as an alternative to plastic bags.

A gazette notice dated February 28, 2017, by the Environment ministry, banned the use of polythene, and the new rule takes effect on August 28.

Quality Assurance and Inspection director Eric Chesire said the allowed materials include canvas, polypropylene and fabric.

“ We are still working to develop standards for more materials. The approved materials are readily available in the market,” he said.

Chesire was speaking on Wednesday during Nyeri Stakeholders Forum at Green Hills Hotel. They discussed measures that will be used to verify the quality of various products approved by the agency.
