Three killed during police gunfight with cattle rustlers in Samburu

Three people were killed and five injured in Samburu East during a shootout between security officers and cattle rustlers.

The incident took place in Kalama area on Sunday as officers attempted to find animals stolen from Laikipia, said Samburu East OCPD Samuel Muthamia.

Muthamia said they were informed the raiders were driving the animals towards Isiolo through Samburu East.

APs and Kenya Police Reservists caught up with the cattle rustlers in Kalama area.

"We ordered them to stop but they opened fire," the OCPD said adding one of those injured was a chief.

He did not say whether those who died were police officers or the attackers.

Muthamia said some of the animals were recovered and that they will pursue the criminals to the end.

"We are not giving up on this war. We will find them and break their bones," he said and asked

residents to cooperate with them.

Those injured were taken to facilities including Wamba Mission hospital

and Cottage hospital.

The bodies were taken to a mortuary in Isiolo town.
