Aspirants in West Pokot have been instructed to present their campaign schedule to the electoral agency to ensure their rallies do not collide.

County returning officer John Mwangi said the IEBC is keen on avoiding any form of violence during campaigns which will officially kick off on Sunday.

“The programme should include the venue because we do want opponents to have campaign meetings in one place,” he said.

Mwangi spoke on Tuesday after a pre-nominations meeting in Kapenguria with aspirants for governor, senator and woman representative posts.

“They should maintain peace. Peace is important. We can shun violence,” he said.

West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo, who is vying for the governor seat on a Kanu ticket, asked the commission to ensure the poll is free and fair.

“We don’t want malpractices such as stealing votes,” he said, adding his party will monitor the process.

“Those planning to steal votes will not make it. Those selling land and taking loans from financial institutions to bribe IEBC are in for a rude shock."

The Senator cautioned his rivals against insults and hate speech.

“We shall not entertain careless talk. Those saying we shall not reach election day are daydreamers,” he said.

Former cabinet minister Samuel Poghisio, a Kanu senator candidate, asked his supporters to maintain peace and order.

“After we have presented our nomination papers on May 28, we shall officially start our campaigns. We shall call on people to maintain peace and be at the forefront of putting the on its toes so they can do what is expected,” said Poghisio.
