Posta Rangers unbeaten ran came to a shuddering halt as Gor Mahia failed to capitalise on that development to extend their lead at the top of the Kenyan Premier League as they were held by Mathare United.
The mailmen who had ruffled feathers in the top flight in the recent weeks fell 1-0 to Ulinzi with striker Stephen Waruru, who has been in top form, scoring the only goal of the match goal five minutes into the second half.
Posta coach Sammy Omollo said was not worried since he knew the run would come to an end at some point.
“The boys played well at one point we were going to lose a match its happened now we can concentrate on winning our next match,” added Omollo.
The defeat was also a devastating blow to Rangers’ positioning on the league table as they plummeted from second to fourth with 23 points while Ulinzi took the empty spot with 24, two behind leaders Gor.
Gor held onto the top spot despite a nerve wrecking 1-1 draw against Thika United at Nyayo stadium.
Uganda international Geoffrey Walusimbi saved a point for the table-toppers with a well taken free-kick after Thika had taken the lead against the run of play with Mwinyi Kibwana rounding Boniface Oluoch to tap the ball home. Gor missed several chances including a penalty from Timothy Otieno before Walusimbi’s late heroics salvaged a point.
Champions Tusker are placed third level on points with Rangers following a 2-0 win over Mathare United. Michael Khamati and Shafik Batambuze’s strikes in each half condemned the Slum Boys to another defeat that leaves them wallowing at 17th place with nine points and the relegation axe hanging over them.
Kariobangi Sharks are placed seventh on the log after holding off fancied Sofapaka to a 0-0 draw. After a poor start to the season the Sharks have stabilised and moved up the table and are positioning themselves as a menace to the big sides in the days to come.
Newly promoted Nzoia United, who are placed ninth, continued their good start to the top flight by thrashing Muhoroni Youth 3-0. Zoo Kericho also registered their first win of the season by beating Bandari 2-0 courtesy of goals from Bernard Wanguche.
AFC Leopards’ poor form continued when they lost 1-0 to Kakamega Homeboyz . The defeat leaves Leopards in 11th place with 15 points and heading towards relegation. Tactician Stewart Hall must galvanize the den or it could be another long season for Leopards with so much expected of them this season.
Western Stima are bottom of the standing after a 2-0 defeat to Sony Sugar and will need a miracle to survive relegation.
