A senior police officer was on Monday charged with three counts of conspiracy to defeat justice.

Sergeant Abdi Sheikh

was accused of concealing evidence in the murder case involving a Nairobi businessman.

The businessman was killed while on a family vacation at a Watamu luxurious resort in Kilifi county.

Abdi llegedly committed the offences between July 26 and September 28, 2015, while investigating the death of Jimmy Baburam. Baburam was murdered at Medina Palms Resort on July 26, 2015.

The former Watamu police station

investigations officer denied the charges

before Malindi chief Magistrate Julie Oseko.

He took a plea after the court dismissed an application in which he sought to prevent charges.

Abdi also denied receiving a Sh45,000 bribe to conceal evidence and was released on Sh300,000 bond or Sh250,000 cash bail.

Baburam's wife Amina Shiraz, Abdi's co-accused, also pleaded not guilty to the charges and was freed on Sh200,000 cash bail.

She was charged alongside Jacob Schmalzle, an American fugitive being sought by police. In April, the court issued a second warrant of arrest against the American.

The first warrant was issued by the Mombasa High Court

in December last year.

On Monday, the court heard that the trio interfered with the execution of the criminal legal proceedings.

Senior assistant DPP Vincent Monda

told the court 10 witnesses will testify in the case which will be mentioned on June 9 and heard on June 26.
