Campaigns for positions in the IAAF World Under-18 team intensified as upcoming athletes staked their claim at the Rift Valley Secondary School Term 2A Games at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium yesterday.
Beatrice Chebet, who represented her school - Saramek Secondary - at the national schools cross country championships emerged victorious in the 3000m in 9:32.9.
Cynthia Chepng’eno was second in 9:34.1 while Reline Catherine Reline took the lesser of the podium positions in 9:37.5.
Despite her triumph, a delighted Chebet said she will not rest on her laurels as she targets the national title.
“The competition was very tough but I tried. I am praying God that I win at the nationals. That is my main focus. There is also the World U18 championships which I also want to take part in,” said Chebet.
Judy Kurui from Simotwet High School in Baringo overcame stiff competition to win the 3000m steeplechase race in 10:45.2.

The Rift Valley Secondary School Sports Association secretary Kirwa Koech praised the huge talent exhibited at the regional championships.
He said the athletes have the potential to represent the country at the U18 championships set for July this year.
“A lot of talents have been spotted here. Kenya has talent for the youth event in July and we expect most of them from this region to take part during the trials and eventually book a place in Team Kenya,” Kirwa said.
