Three Kenyan stars have been named in the Kampala side for the Africa City Challenge tournament slated for Nairobi in June.
The three, who were members of the national team that finished sixth in the seven-team qualifiers in Egypt in March, play in the Ugandan top league. They are Phil Amenyi, Mike Makiadi and Brian Namake.
Besides Kampala, Kigali, Juba, Dar-es-Salaam and a team from Somalia have confirmed entry for the June 11-16 show. The championships carries a lucrative prize of Sh1.8 million and will bring together top men’s all star teams from the region.
Kampala squad also include Ugandan veteran captain Stephen Omony, Jimmy Enabu, Joseph Ikonng, Mark Opio, Soro Geoffrey, Sudi Ulanga and Ivan Lumanyika.
The winner of the five-day event to be played at the Nyayo Stadium gymnasium, will take home US$6,000. Nairobi, who named Ben Oluoch and Bogonko Bosire as the coaches to handle the team, will have to shake off a strong challenge from Kampala and Kigali if they are to emerge winners. Uganda bagged the silver medal behind Egypt in the Cairo games with Rwanda finishing third. The two teams will stand between the Kenyans and the top prize.
